What Is the Curaçao Gaming License?

The Curaçao gambling license is the document through which the government authorizes a company to offer casino games: slots, sports betting, live dealer games. In practice, without this kind of license, a casino isn’t allowed to give you access to these games in the first place.

Curaçao is a Caribbean island and a constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. This type of license sits at the Tier 2 level, meaning it’s perfectly real and legitimate, but the rules are more relaxed and the costs lower compared to licenses from Malta or the UK.

A while back, Curaçao operated under an unusual system. There used to be a handful of master licenses granted to private companies, and these companies, in turn, sold sub-licenses to other operators.

You should know that only 4 master license holders ever existed, and any Curaçao-licensed casino you’ve come across so far was most likely a sub-licensee of one of these companies.

The National Ordinance on Games of Chance, adopted in 2024, changed the following three things:

• The old system was abolished. All master licenses and sub-licenses were cancelled, so you won’t find casinos with that kind of license anymore.
• A single regulator was created. The Curaçao Gaming Authority is now the only institution that issues licenses in Curaçao.
• Only direct licensing exists now. Operators answer directly to the CGA, which is the most beneficial part for you as a player.

How the New CGA License Actually Works

You should know that there are two types of licenses. A B2C license covers operators who take bets directly from players meaning the casinos you actually play at. On the other hand, a B2B license covers suppliers and game studios. In essence, this category isn’t really something you need to worry about.

Getting a Curaçao gambling licens now involves two stages, and it’s no longer just a formality.

Unfortunately, there’s no guarantee that your funds are kept separate. Curaçao doesn’t require operators to keep your deposits apart from the company’s own money.
